In the last 30 years, the population in the east of Singapore has grown rapidly. As the number of people living in residential areas such as Bedok, Simei and Tampines increased, there was a need for a major hospital to cater to the healthcare needs of the approximately 750,000 people living here.

The hospital's motto, "Caring For The Community In The East" encapsulates Changi General Hospital's (CGH)'s long-term objective to serve as a healthcare hub in the east.
